Tributary in nature, my work originates out of a deep respect and admiration for Black humanity.
I am interested in the distinct, resilient and interminable spirit of the African diaspora across generations, spanning from distant time periods in American history to the present day. My work explores themes such as spirituality, interiority, recompense and love in various forms—romantic, familial and platonic.
Utilizing a range of mediums that includes oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor, my art practice challenges the viewer to reconsider their gaze and contemplate Black existence from an unadulterated perspective.
My process typically begins with an arresting photograph that captures an intimate moment in time. I draw inspiration from everywhere: documentary photography, family albums, vintage magazines, everyday life. My subjects are loved ones, personal heroes, perfect strangers, notable figures and cultural icons who I find visually intriguing and/or exceptional in their contributions to society.
Whether I’m experimenting with figurative abstraction or different forms of portraiture, my ultimate aim is to provide a visual articulation of Black experiences, bonds and sentiments that are often challenging to express in words.
